DERMATOLOGIC SURGERY

A neo or nevo, is a small spot of the skin, usually of brown, or  black color, that appears generally after the birth. When, after long time, a neo changes shape or color or when it appears on the skin and it quickly grows it is necessary to address the plastic surgeon in order to remove it in local anesthesia and to perform a histological examination.

An examination is always necessary even if the lesion is painless, without postponments, since a neo removal is absolutely safe. How can we recognise a dangerous mole With the A - B - C - D - E rule:

A - stands for ASIMMETRYTracing an imaginary line, that halves the neo, the two halves are not proportionate.

B - stands for BORDERA benign neo presents a regular border, while a suspicious neo can present jagged edges.

C - stands for COLOURA normal neo presents a uniform color, from light brown to the dark brown, while a suspicious neo can be of black color or have more colours (various tonalities of brown with red or blue color).

D - stands for DIMENSIONA neo must be shown to a plastic surgeon when it is bigger than 0,6 cms.

E - stands for Evolution-AGEA neo is evolving and changing its normal morphology.

Age: over 15 years. People at risk are those with light hair, reddish and/or light skin that gets burnt easily when exposed to sun and with light color eyes.

How to prevent  the tumors of the skinReduce the exposure to the sun in the central hours of the day (from the 11.00 am to the 3.00 pm) and wear sun glasses, hats and shirt.

Use high protection creams and apply them every two hours. Protect newborns and children from sun exposure all day long, by using high protection creams and by repeating application every two hours.

Avoid sun burn, especially before 20 years of age. Teach children and teenagers the importance of correct exposure to the sun. Avoid the use of U.V. lamps. Remember that the solar damages accumulate in time!
